Smith creates this body of work with an emphasis on urban landscapes and street photography - working in both film and digital medium, and often taking a crossover or blending approach to both mediums. "Urban photography, whether through the viewfinder or 'from the hip' affords few opportunities for second chances. Walking in an urban setting with a camera resting and triggered at waist-level might be perceived as shooting blindly. In contrast, when it works I am able to capture images that otherwise would not have been possible… composing an image not as seen through the camera viewfinder, but through my eye and the eye of the camera separately. Whether film or digital, I define a successful image as when what I see in the moment and the image captured through the lens achieve convergence in the desired, or satisfyingly surprising, result."
